She holds a Bachelor of Music with emphasis in Piano Performance from Boise State University, from which she graduated cum laude in 2007. At BSU Tonya studied with Del Parkinson.  Tonya holds permanent National Certification through the Music Teachers National Association. Besides keeping her NCTM Certification current, she strives to keep up with current teaching developments through attending local and national workshops, and connecting with her colleagues on a regular basis.

Tonya relocated to Northern Virginia in 2021. Before that, she taught in Idaho from 2001-2021. Throughout her teaching years in Idaho, she held various board positions at both the local and state level in the Idaho Music Teachers Association, including chairing the Treasure Valley MTA Sonata Competition-- the biggest amateur student competition held in Idaho. Tonya has been highly sought-after as a judge for piano events, and she has extensive experience collaborating with other teachers in all types of events-- from music festivals with shaved ice outside to serious competitions.

Tonya's students have been honored with many awards and achievements, including first place in the IMTA Sonata Competition, Gold Cup Honors for NFMC Solo Festival, and completing graduating senior recitals.

Tonya takes pride in teaching all ages and levels of students, from beginning to advanced. Teaching is her creative outlet and she loves using various fun and engaging methods to help students in learning. Her philosophy is that the three essential aspects of music instruction are ability, enjoyment, and understanding. Her teaching approach fosters a well-rounded musician and includes performance, sight reading, theory, technic, and aural skills.

Master Classes
A Master Class is a "lesson" with an expert in the field.
